History comes alive, again!
Are we in a new world, or witnessing the end of the old one?
As I write this, the US and Israeli forces have attacked Iran. Iran has retaliated by sending missile barrages towards Baharin, Qatar, UAE and Israel. Trump is calling for a regime change in Iran and wants to install the son of deposed Shah. Not quite the way of the world I knew, where there was at least the figleaf of international law used by countries wanting to attack one another.
I feel pity for Keir Starmer. As far as I am aware, his government is trying to fix Britain's institutions after the stupidity of Brexit and fifteen years of Tory assault on public economy and straightlaced corruption. But Sir Keir has no courage to do something or say something openly. He appears like Trump's poodle, and Trump is a difficult master even to be a poodle too. Therefore, notwithstanding whatever his government is doing, he looks like a joke. He is hollowness personified, and at moments like this, he could as well be a hologram. I think he privately wishes that he was indeed a hologram, and people knew this.
What do I think of Iran? First, I have no particular love for its regime and from what I hear - and I don't trust the BBC - I gather it is a repressive regime well past its sell-by date. However, regime change is nasty business and usually innocent people die. No one can convince that Trump or Benjamin Netanyahu have the best interests of the ordinary Iranians at heart. We are seeing yet another oil war. The last one ended pretty badly.
Besides, Trump seems to be combining Clinton's immorality, Bush's regime changing idiocy, Obama's rule by executive order and Biden's dementia - plus his own earlier treasonous self, into one Presidential package. He is raging a war not against Iran, but the 'world order' that was created not after the Second World War but also the principles propagated after the first, which acknowledged the rights of the small states to exist.
In all this, history is going backwards. Could it be that Trump declares himself lifetime emperor and nominates Jared Kushner to be his successor in a few years? Anything is indeed possible, and before one scoffs at the suggestion, one should see what's happening with the Board of Peace. Imagine the Board of Peace taking over Iran. I am indulging in conspiracy theories as history comes alive again.
